For about ten min­utes, there was a post here describ­ing the pend­ing move to Media Tem­ple from my VPS account with Tek­Tonic…

Until I found that I’d be pay­ing an addi­tional $20/month for their ser­vices on top of the $20/month host­ing costs.

Cue tears of grief and anguish. Their ser­vices are so appeal­ing but at the total price point for what I need, it’s just not worth it for me. So I’ve purged the post and scrapped the email I was about to send to the few peo­ple I still host.

I wouldn’t be nearly so pissed off about all of this if I hadn’t noticed this after I’d paid for the first month. For less than an hour of use, maybe they’ll refund my first month… But I doubt it.

To be hon­est, I’m not unhappy with Tek­Tonic but now that I no longer run a DIY web-host (and I don’t put much time into my own domains as it is), I just don’t need this level of finesse and con­trol any­more. I’m gen­uinely sick of wor­ry­ing about OS updates, secu­rity patches, soft­ware ver­sions, and secu­rity on a hobby box now that my pro­fes­sional liveli­hood is made from wor­ry­ing about OS updates, secu­rity patches, soft­ware ver­sions, and secu­rity on hard­ware I get paid to maintain.

Medi­aTem­ple had edged out an account from Seg­ment Pub­lish­ing based on pric­ing and rep­u­ta­tion (as MT is some­thing of a shared-hosting dar­ling right now), though I admit Seg­Pub came highly rec­om­mended. I had really looked for­ward to not hav­ing to man­age my own DNS server, IMAP server or SMTP server anymore.

In other mod­estly related news, the girl and I are mov­ing yet again (five months after the last move). Our upstairs neigh­bor and apa­thetic land­lord have got­ten the bet­ter of us, and we are con­ced­ing defeat in the form of a 17-foot UHaul mov­ing truck. Appar­ently they are the only local mov­ing truck provider who both­ers keep­ing up on their insur­ance policy.

Hav­ing already trashed one U-Haul truck in the orig­i­nal move to Mass­a­chu­setts, I am wary of rent­ing a truck with­out insur­ance, even if it is from the worst pos­si­ble mov­ing com­pany in Amer­ica right now.
